Sun, Sea, Earth and Fire

Last year, this post could have been called "wet, cold, windy, brr" with the teachers all dressed in jackets with hoods and wrapped in blankets! Luckily, today was a perfect warm, sunny Spring day for a carnival. All the Grade 3-6's (around 350 kids) had their athletics carnival at Youngtown oval today. The Kinder to Grade 2's have tabloid sports - more like games, and less competitive. Being in Grade 3, this was Lauren's first "proper" carnival, and she did very well. Patrick did really well too - especially in the 800 metres which I must say, I didn't think he'd have the stamina for especially after coming 2nd in the 100m and 200m and being in two finals of the tug-of-war. Lauren came 4th in the 100m, 1st in the sack race, won two finals as part of her tug-of-war team and the best of all was an outstanding win (by quite a bit) in the 200m. Needless to say I was very proud of both of them! I took lots of video and not many photos. It's great we use Youngtown oval with a stand in the shade (or out of the freezing wind last year) and there's also a canteen so our canteen staff come on the day. I used to sit in this stand 20+ years ago watching the good old City South footballers on Saturday's - ah, the memories...

The carnival is really well done with the heats run during the past week at school, and the 1500m later this week.
All the boys in this group are grade 4 and 5 - Paddy is one of the tallest.
Not impressed that I stopped her on the way back from the canteen!
Patrick and Lauren's "house" Sea came second after leading all day until the final events - the relays. It was a great day, and they are both exhausted. For such a large school, they organise it really well. I remember sitting out ALL day in the middle of the oval and getting burnt to a crisp back in "my day"!
