After Carter's recent trip to hospital, I just wanted to have a record of this (although it's mostly a blur).

On Monday night, I found my Carter face down in his cot in a pool of sweat making a horrible crying sound.

I picked him up and he was burning hot and convulsing. I stripped him off and called Shayne who cooled him with cool face washers while I called the ambulance. As well as convulsing his eyes were both fixed to the left and his legs were quite stiff. He was conscious but non responsive for what seemed like a VERY long time - we think around 15 minutes. When we arrived at the hospital his heart rate was over 200 and he was still pretty much out of it. It took quite some time and a dose of panadol and another of ibuprofen for his temp to come down and for him to be more responsive.

Once his heart rate had slowed for some time and they had observed him, they took bloods to test for infections and meningitis. We were transferred to the kid's ward at about 2.30a.m. after around 3 hours in emergency. After sleeping fitfully he was better the next morning, and after having a urine test come back OK, he was a allowed to go home. Nearly 3 days later and he's almost back to his usual, happy, healthy self.

It was VERY frightening. With two older children and years working in child care I'd never seen anything like it, and guess I just want to share our story and the info via the link below so that others are aware. There are a lot of nasty viruses with high temps going around this Spring, and two other children - aged 8 months and 2.5 years - were in the kid's ward with febrile convulsions at the same time as us. Carter hadn't had a temp prior to this but had had a virus and cold earlier in the month.
