After the 2009 bushfires, we helped out by making up some kits to transport to Victoria, and by sorting donations at a local drop off point. Patrick and Lauren helped with the kits, Shayne collected boxes, and Mum and I spent a day buried under a pile of donated clothing. One thing became clear, MANY people want to help. The problem is logistically, getting donations to those in need can be a nightmare, especially due to the volume of donations and them having to be sorted and checked (and often washed) before being given to those in need.
This facebook page has been established for the current Tasmanian bushfires: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tassie-Fires-We-Can-Help/265695153558391
and an important message from their page is here:
"Just spoke to the security/emergency management team: they are still very much in response mode, and are so pleased to hear for all the help that is being offered. They are putting together a recovery plan, and ask that people just WAIT until they put that out before doing too much! The last thing they need is a bunch of stuff they don't need. Our help will be greatest in the coming weeks and months.
So keep your eye on this page, and listen to the ABC, and maybe just start thinking of fundraising ideas in the meantime....!"
St Vincent de Paul also have a facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/St-Vincent-de-Paul-Society-Tasmania/133939480016860?ref=ts&fref=ts&__req=10
Also, Telstra have made all payphones in fire affect areas here in Tassie free - important as the mobile networks can get clogged at times like this.
When a donation line for financial donations is set up, I will post the details.

I've heard about charities being overwhelmed with doantions in the past and agree it is best to wait and see what is needed where, and probably donating $ is the best way
No worries at all. It's so nice to see so many people on that facebook page jumping in to help where needed.
it's great to see so mnay people donating from around the country.
