When I went to Europe in 1997, I spent 8 days in London before heading of on a five week Contiki European Explorer. I didn't really notice the smog too much in London apart from the layer of grimy black soot on all the buildings. After a day of sightseeing though, you'd notice it when you blew your nose and it was black and gritty - lovely! It wasn't until we were on tour in Barcelona a few days after leaving London, that it caught up with me, and I ended up with asthma, and using an inhaler a few times a day became necessary.
At home, I occasionally need my puffer - usually in winter when I've got a cold, or after being in an indoor pool (only because it's trendy to have Chlorine Induced Asthma like half our swimmers!), so it was a shock to have to rely so heavily on it. It makes me wonder how many of our athletes are going to come home from Beijing with asthma and other respiratory problems?
Puffer shaking may become the new Olympic Sport - right up there with synchronized swimming!
GO AUSSIES!
