Whooping Cough Outbreak!
There have been over 100 cases of whooping cough in Tassie so far this year. Last year there were only 4! Health professionals are suggesting that anyone in contact with new babies, or those who have not yet been immunised (usually done at 8 weeks) should have a booster. They are also suggesting students in Grade 10 have a booster, parents and grandparents - so pretty much everyone except kids who have recently had one! I rang my doctor as I work with babies and wanted a booster, and you can pick up a prescription from your doctor, take it in to either an appointment or the immunisation clinic at your surgery - mine has a clinic on Wednesday. Depending on which vaccine they give you, private health cover will reimburse some of the cost. Some of the vaccines have a tetanus booster with them so it's a bonus!!! The government may even step up with a subsidised program , and some work places will pay for the vaccinations. If you think you may need one, check with your doctor. Whooping cough is life threatening to babies!

Whooping cough is horrible and we need to make sure it doe not return!
P.
I am booked in at the clinic on Wednesday and have a couple of pharmacies trying to get hold of the vaccine for me - they ran out throughout the state. If you are thinking of getting one, get a prescription and check with your pharmacy if they have them in stock before going to the doctor as they are hard to find! Also, the Boostrix vaccine (includes tetanus and diptheria) is $75 with MBF paying back about $40
