We had a birthday barbie for
Mum today. It's her birthday on Monday, but
Head Chef Shayne is working tomorrow and Monday, so we had it today. There were
18 of us so I marinated what seemed like 100's of kebabs with my free
Masterfoods Hometyle Marinades.

It wouldn't be an Aussie Day (early) BBQ without prawns!
The birthday girl posing!
Luckily she doesn't have tonsils or they'd be skewered!!!

Nanna's little boys love their food!

The "test run" lemon cake from yesterday - that's all that's left!

Mum and I have recently read "
Salvation Creek" and "
The House at Salvation Creek" - memoirs by Aussie Journalist Susan Duncan. All through her books she talks of her "melt in your mouth" lemon cake, and "the smell of lemons drifting through the house" as she cooks it, so I got the recipe (had to buy the new and improved version of the book, photocopy the recipe and take it back to the bookshop - I thought I might look a bit sus taking a photo with my mobile in the bookshop!). It was worth it - its vey moist and lemony, not too sweet and can be eaten as is, with no icing or cream. It has a lemon glaze, and you serve it warm - YUMMO! I'll be making that again - it's so easy as you throw everything in the food processor and it's very quick. Let me know if you'd like the recipe - especially those lucky people with lemon trees!
Anyway, a fun day was had by all! For those of you relies who wanted photos of Mum - you got them, but I forgot to get a group photo. Will do that next time!

Gee Kylie, you look like your mum!!
Did you like the marinade?
I would like to try the lemon cake recipe too thanks.
Love Lorraine xxx
Oh yum!!! Looks like a great night.
Thank you Lorraine! The marinades were nice, but I wouldn't rave about them - didn't seem to have a lot of flavour considering I marinated the chicken hours before the BBQ. very easy way to do it though - open the pack and pour it on - my kind of recipe! I will drop a copy of the Lemon cake recipes in to Lisa's one day this week for you. Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks Kylie.

Yum! What a great BBQ - not just your average snag in a bun barbie for you guys!
No "just a snag" barbies for us! You should have seen the desserts! As well as the cake, Mum mad a HUGE trifle with the works (which I resisted) and a yummy Summer pudding (lots and lots of berries which I may have had a little piece of the next day!). Oh, we had heaps of salads too (of course!)
I know I have a vivid imagination at times, but the cooked chicken on skewers looked a bit like a picture of lots of little santas on a plate. Yeah, I know, need new glasses.
Great barbeque (cooked by Kiwi), great company, great food, great family.
Thanks to all for making my Aussie Day barbie so special. Especially to the Lithgow Mob.
You are so right - the Santas on a plate were left over from Christmas - chicken keeps for a month doesn't it??? What's the number for you optometrist???
